About the position

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join a global engineering team responsible for the design and continuous innovation of AWS's rapidly expanding data center footprint. This role involves collaborating with various teams to ensure the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS global infrastructure, focusing on creating resilient and cost-effective electrical distribution systems. The engineer will work on multi-million dollar designs, drive continuous advancements, and support construction from concept to completion, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.
  • Create data center electrical designs and collaborate with other disciplines to produce a construction document set.
  • Develop designs that meet or exceed quality requirements while adhering to budget constraints.
  • Specify appropriate electrical equipment in collaboration with regional vendors and manufacturers.
  • Define site utility requirements in coordination with local utilities.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes by working with local agencies having jurisdiction.
  • Review and approve equipment submittals.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
  • Collaborate with commissioning teams to test and validate the installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for reviews and work with onsite field engineers, providing engineering evaluations and electrical systems audits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 8+ years of relevant electrical experience.
  • Cumulative 3+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
  • 2+ years of experience developing design documentation (plans, specifications, etc.) for construction and/or permitting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering License and knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Detailed understanding of critical data center electrical equipment (including UPS, diesel generators, switchgear, power distribution units, VFDs, and automatic/static transfer switches).
  • Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects, multiple significant upgrade projects, large scale technical operations, or large-scale compute farms.
