About the position

The City of Dover is seeking a motivated individual for the position of Electrical Engineer I within the Electric Department. This role is essential for performing electrical engineering and technical work that supports the City of Dover's electric utility system. The successful candidate will engage in a variety of tasks that include preparing diagrams, schematics, and drawings for power transmission and distribution systems. This position requires a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and the ability to apply them in practical scenarios to ensure the efficient operation of the electric utility system. In this role, the Electrical Engineer I will assist in the design and modification of transmission and distribution lines, as well as substations. Responsibilities will include calculating the appropriate conductor types and sizes, transformer sizes, and ensuring the proper application of electrical equipment. The engineer will also be responsible for specifying relay settings, fuse sizes, and reclosers to ensure proper coordination within the system. Additionally, the engineer will evaluate renewable energy installation applications, investigate issues related to electrical control equipment, and recommend effective solutions. The position may involve leading staff on specific projects, gathering and maintaining data, and preparing both routine and special reports. The Electrical Engineer I will also coordinate staff meetings and participate in in-service training and technical or professional classes to enhance their skills and knowledge in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and/or prepare diagrams, tracings, and schematics for power transmission and distribution systems
  • Prepare drawings of electric work to be performed or changes to be made to existing electrical gear
  • Set up and maintain records of field surveys, drawings and prints
  • Participate in transmission and distribution line designs and substation designs and modifications
  • Calculate proper conductor type and size, transformer size, and proper application of equipment
  • Specify relay settings, fuse sizes, and reclosers for proper coordination
  • Evaluate/deny/approve renewable energy installation applications
  • Investigate problems relating to electrical control equipment and recommend solutions
  • May lead staff on specific projects
  • Gather and maintain data/information and prepare routine and special reports, as well as coordinate staff meetings and attend in-service training and technical or professional classes

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
  • Bachelor's degree in a closely related field may be acceptable
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must obtain Fundamentals of Engineering certification within two (2) years of employment
