About the position

Merrick and Company is a nationally recognized multi-office and multi-discipline firm with over 60 years of experience in achieving design excellence. We are currently seeking an experienced Laboratory / Facility Electrical Engineer for our Life Sciences business unit, with opportunities available in our Greenwood Village, CO, San Antonio, TX, or Georgia offices. This role is ideal for candidates who are eager for personal and professional growth and possess a solid understanding of design and construction document processes. The successful candidate will be adaptable to both short-term and long-term projects in a dynamic environment that requires a blend of creativity and technical expertise. As a Laboratory / Facility Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for all phases of engineering production and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for a variety of projects, ranging from programming through construction administration. This includes interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating the design and production efforts for large or complex projects. You will design electrical systems for facilities and laboratories for government, university, and private clients, providing conceptual and detailed design and analysis for facility power distribution, emergency power generation, grounding and lightning protection, lighting design, telecommunications, fire alarm systems, security, and special systems. In this role, you will also prepare supporting documentation such as calculations, reports, and specifications, and meet with clients to validate the proposed scope of work. You will prepare fee proposals for engineering design work and collaborate with other disciplines to ensure the accuracy of project packages while meeting schedule and budget commitments. The position requires strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment. You will also be expected to mentor junior engineers and designers, delegating work as necessary, and manage the local team with minimal direction. A hybrid work schedule is available for employees in good standing, allowing for a blend of home and office work.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems for facilities and laboratories for government, university, and private clients.
  • Provide conceptual and detailed design and analysis for facility power distribution, emergency power generation, grounding and lightning protection, lighting design, telecommunications, fire alarm systems, security, and special systems.
  • Prepare supporting documentation such as calculations, reports, and specifications.
  • Meet with clients to prepare and validate proposed scope of work.
  • Prepare fee proposals for engineering design work.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure accuracy of project packages and meet schedule and budget commitments.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Complete tasks with accuracy and strong attention to detail.
  • Consistently meet deadlines and complete tasks as defined.
  • Travel as needed for project requirements.
  • Write and edit specifications.
  • Direct and mentor the work of junior engineers and designers, delegating work as required.

Requirements

  • Eight (8) years of experience in facility Electrical Engineering design.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required.
  • Familiarity with REVIT/AutoCAD or other design software-based drawing generation.
  • Experience using electrical calculation tools, including lighting and power software such as AGi32, Elum Tools, SKM Power Tools, ETAP, and EasyPower.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Excel and Word.
  • Experience with technical codes such as NEC, NESC, NFPA, and IEEE is required.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required for client projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with USDA, ARS, CDC, and other laboratory clients is highly desired.
