About the position

Merrick and Company is a nationally recognized multi-office and multi-discipline firm with over 60 years of experience in achieving design excellence. The company is seeking an experienced Laboratory / Facility Electrical Engineer for its Life Sciences business unit, with opportunities available in Greenwood Village, CO, San Antonio, TX, or Georgia offices. The ideal candidate will have a strong desire for personal and professional growth, a solid understanding of design and construction document processes, and the ability to adapt to both short-term and long-term projects. This role requires a blend of creativity and high technical skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for all phases of engineering production and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for various projects, ranging from programming through construction administration. This includes interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating the design and production efforts for large or complex projects. The position offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing employees to work from both home and the office, depending on their standing with the company. The typical salary range for this position is between $100,000.00 and $120,000.00, with base pay varying based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Candidates must possess extensive knowledge of electrical regulatory codes and be able to communicate effectively with clients and team members. The role also involves mentoring junior engineers and designers, ensuring accuracy in project packages, and meeting deadlines while maintaining strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems for facilities and laboratories for government, university, and private clients.
  • Provide conceptual and detailed design and analysis for facility power distribution, emergency power generation, grounding and lightning protection, lighting design, telecommunications, fire alarm systems, security, and special systems.
  • Prepare supporting documentation such as calculations, reports, and specifications.
  • Meet with clients to prepare and validate proposed scope of work.
  • Prepare fee proposals for engineering design work.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure accuracy of the package and meet schedule and budget commitments.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Work effectively within a collaborative team environment and complete tasks with accuracy and strong attention to detail.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, delegating work as required and managing the local team.
  • Travel as needed for project requirements.

Requirements

  • Eight (8) years of experience in facility Electrical Engineering design.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required.
  • Familiarity with REVIT/AutoCAD or other design software-based drawing generation.
  • Experience using electrical calculation tools such as AGi32, Elum Tools, SKM Power Tools, ETAP, and EasyPower is desired.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Excel and Word.
  • Experience with technical codes such as NEC, NESC, NFPA, and IEEE is required.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required for client projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with USDA, ARS, CDC, and other laboratory clients is highly desired.
