About the position

AECOM is seeking a mid-level Electrical Engineer to join our Rail and Transit team at our Oakland, CA Office. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing electrical and traction power construction documents for transit systems and facilities, including BART and Caltrain. Under the supervision of a Senior Engineer, you will collaborate with a diverse team of Engineers and Specialists across various rail systems disciplines, including systems engineering, signals, electrification systems, and project controls. This role requires a strong focus on teamwork and communication, as you will be working closely with project managers, systems engineers, signals engineers, analysts, and coordinators to ensure project success. In this position, you will prepare design drawings and documents, technical specifications, cost estimates, proposals, calculations, and studies related to traction power and facilities for electrified railways, both AC and DC systems. It is essential to ensure that all design elements comply with relevant rail operation rules, applicable industry codes and standards, and client expectations. You will also guide drafters/designers and junior engineers in creating one-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing drawings, substation physical layouts, and the selection of MV/LV electrical equipment. Additionally, you will interact with clients to discuss technical topics clearly and professionally, facilitating the resolution of customer expectations versus technical issues. The role demands the ability to work with tight schedules, maintain flexibility, control project budgets, and motivate junior staff. Other duties may be assigned as required, making adaptability and a proactive approach essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare design drawings and documents for traction power and facilities for electrified railways.
  • Ensure compliance with rail operation rules, industry codes, and client expectations.
  • Guide drafters/designers and junior engineers in creating technical drawings and diagrams.
  • Interact with clients to discuss technical topics professionally.
  • Facilitate resolution of customer expectations versus technical issues.
  • Work with tight schedules and control project budgets.
  • Motivate junior staff and assist in their development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience/education.
  • 4 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering.
  • Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and power system analysis tools such as SKM and ETAP.
  • Strong knowledge of NFPA 70.
  • Ability to work successfully in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience in different phases of the Engineering Design Life.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Professional Engineer License (PE).
  • Proven ability to work across different business units.
  • Experience with project proposals and client interactions.
