About the position

The Electrical Engineer position at General Atomics focuses on the development and support of high-power electromagnetic systems and advanced technologies in a fast-paced Research and Development environment. The role involves working with National Instruments hardware and LabVIEW for system instrumentation and control, contributing to various projects including high-energy laser systems and airborne sensors. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineering teams to architect and develop control systems while ensuring safety and efficiency in complex electrical and optical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to development and sustainment efforts for HEL and other Control Systems using National Instruments hardware with LabVIEW firmware/software programming.
  • Work with GA-EMS Engineering staff and chief engineers to architect and develop control systems for the HEL product line and other GA-EMS product lines and technology areas.
  • Adapt evolving processes for control of complex, electrical/optical/mechanical systems with hardware and personnel safety as top priority.
  • Grasp, understand, and correlate many pieces of a complex system concurrently and be able to identify, construct, document, and troubleshoot dependencies, relationships, and logical processes in a clear, organized, methodical manner.
  • Execute technical concepts, strategies, and plans quickly and work with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Nine (9) or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, seven (7) or more years of experience with a master's degree, or four (4) or more years with a PhD.
  • Active or Ability to obtain DoD Security Clearance is required.
  • Integration and configuration of National Instruments (NI) hardware.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience developing software using LabVIEW.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as RS422, I2C, GigE, SPI, TCP, UDP, etc.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of National Instruments LabVIEW Core 1/2/3 courses (at a minimum); being Certified LabVIEW Developer is desirable.
  • LabVIEW architecture and project development for control of complex, high-consequence system-of-systems.
  • Familiarity with DoD technical review process (at a minimum: SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR).
  • Desired Experience with other software development languages such as C++, MATLAB or Python.
  • Desired Experience working with Linux based systems.
  • Desired knowledge and experience with EE fundamental concepts and troubleshooting hardware.
