About the position

The Electrical Engineering co-op at Cooper Tire, a Goodyear company, offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in the development and testing of machinery and equipment. Under the guidance of a plant engineer or senior engineers, co-op students will engage in meaningful work assignments that contribute to the innovative tire products produced by the company. This role emphasizes learning and professional growth, as each co-op student is paired with a coach or mentor to facilitate their development throughout the co-op experience. In this position, students will be responsible for reviewing project instructions and blueprints to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, and the necessary test equipment. They will also devise, fabricate, and assemble new or modified mechanical, electrical, or electromechanical components for various products, including industrial equipment and machinery. The role involves setting up and conducting tests of complete units and components under operational conditions, analyzing test results, and making necessary modifications to meet design specifications. Co-op students will have the opportunity to document their test procedures and results, providing valuable insights and recommendations for product improvements. This position not only allows for technical skill development but also encourages effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders, including production, maintenance, vendors, and management. Overall, the Electrical Engineering co-op is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that prepares students for future careers in engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and tests machinery and equipment under direction of plant engineer and/or senior engineers.
  • Reviews project instructions and blueprints to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problems, and possible solutions.
  • Drafts detail drawings or sketches for drafting room completion or to request parts fabrication by machine, sheet metal, electrical, or wood shops.
  • Devises, fabricates, and assembles new or modified mechanical, electrical, or electromechanical components or assemblies for products such as industrial equipment and machinery.
  • Sets up and conducts tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance.
  • Analyzes indicated and calculated test results in relation to design or rated specifications and test objectives, and modifies or adjusts equipment to meet specifications.
  • Records test procedures and results, numerical and graphical data, and recommendations for changes in product or test method.
  • May, on occasion, be required to perform other duties as necessary to ensure efficient plant operations.

Requirements

  • Must be a currently enrolled student majoring in Electrical Engineering and having completed at least the freshman year.
  • Cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Will be interacting with production, maintenance, vendors, contractors, management, and engineering.
  • Occasionally involved in presentations and providing training for plant personnel.
  • Must have good problem solving skills both from a troubleshooting and project planning standpoint.
