About the position

The Electrical Engineering co-op at Cooper Tire, a Goodyear company, offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in the development and testing of machinery and equipment. Under the guidance of a plant engineer or senior engineers, co-op students will engage in meaningful work assignments that contribute to the innovative tire products produced by the company. This role emphasizes the importance of learning, as each co-op student is paired with a coach or mentor to facilitate their professional growth and development. In this position, students will be responsible for reviewing project instructions and blueprints to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, and the necessary test equipment. They will also analyze technical problems and propose solutions, which may include part redesigns or material substitutions. The role involves drafting detailed drawings or sketches for fabrication and assembling new or modified mechanical, electrical, or electromechanical components for various products, including industrial equipment and machinery. Co-op students will set up and conduct tests of complete units and components under operational conditions, aiming to improve equipment performance and gather data for development and quality control. They will analyze test results, record procedures and outcomes, and make recommendations for product or method changes. Additionally, students may be required to perform other duties as necessary to ensure efficient plant operations, providing a comprehensive learning experience in a dynamic work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and tests machinery and equipment under direction of plant engineer and/or senior engineers.
  • Reviews project instructions and blueprints to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, and test equipment.
  • Drafts detail drawings or sketches for fabrication or parts request.
  • Devises, fabricates, and assembles new or modified mechanical, electrical, or electromechanical components or assemblies.
  • Sets up and conducts tests of complete units and components under operational conditions.
  • Analyzes test results in relation to design specifications and test objectives.
  • Records test procedures and results, numerical and graphical data, and recommendations for changes.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled student majoring in Electrical Engineering with at least freshman year completed.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a scale of 4.0.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in written form.
  • Ability to interact with production, maintenance, vendors, contractors, management, and engineering.
  • Good problem-solving skills from troubleshooting and project planning perspectives.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with presentations and providing training for plant personnel.
