About the position

Join The AES Corporation, a Fortune 500 company leading the global energy revolution. We are currently seeking an Associate/Regular/Senior/Lead Engineer - T&D Standards & Innovation. This role requires excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills to lead our T&D strategic and innovation projects. You will support the research, development, and maintenance of electrical engineering, equipment, and construction standards, ensuring a safe, reliable, sustainable, and affordable grid for the future. As a subject matter expert, you will work on transformers, reactors, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, and more, leading R&D and standardization projects related to emerging technologies such as IEC 61850, edge control, and energy storage systems. You will also manage innovation projects funded by government agencies and maintain relationships with external partners. Your responsibilities will include preparing and presenting technical papers, improving electric rate payer experiences, and managing compliance with corporate policies and regulations. This position offers the opportunity to interface with various internal stakeholders and requires a commitment to professional development, including obtaining PE licenses in Indiana and Ohio.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert on transformers, reactors, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, and other electrical equipment.
  • Lead R&D, pilot, and standardization projects related to emerging technologies such as IEC 61850 and energy storage systems.
  • Prepare, submit, implement, and manage innovation projects funded by government agencies.
  • Prepare and present technical papers and reports related to innovation projects and AES best practices.
  • Continuously improve electric rate payer experience and minimize costs by specifying safe and reliable electric materials and designs.
  • Develop and implement strategic goals and tactical initiatives for material, engineering, and construction standards.
  • Manage research and application of AES corporate policies and federal/state regulations.
  • Interface with internal stakeholders to solicit information and ideas.
  • Obtain and maintain professional engineering (PE) licenses in Indiana and Ohio.
  • Manage technical verification and editing for other standards engineers.
  • Join and maintain active membership in professional societies.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; power system & engineering major preferred.
  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
  • Lead Engineer: Minimum 8 years of hands-on experience in T&D innovation and engineering.
  • Senior Engineer: Minimum 5 years of practical experience in T&D fields.
  • Engineer: At least 2 years of practical experience in T&D-related disciplines; candidates with a Master's or PhD may qualify without prior experience.
  • Associate Engineer: No prior experience required; entry-level position.
  • For Lead Engineer, minimum three years of leadership experience in departments or large projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Software, such as PSCAD and EMTP.
  • Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test labs, such as RTDS or OPAL-RT.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., IEC61850, IEEE 1646, DNP 3.0).
  • Familiarity with coding in Python or other programming languages.
  • Experience using electrical design tools, such as AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
