About the position

The AES Corporation is seeking an Associate/Regular/Senior/Lead Engineer for T&D Standards & Innovation. This position is pivotal in leading strategic and innovative projects within the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) sector. The successful candidate will possess excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for supporting the research, development, and maintenance of electrical engineering standards. The role focuses on creating a safe, reliable, sustainable, and affordable grid for the future. As part of a company that is at the forefront of the global energy revolution, the engineer will be involved in various projects that aim to enhance the electric rate payer experience while minimizing costs through the specification of safe and reliable electric materials, designs, and installations. The engineer will act as a subject matter expert on various electrical components and systems, including transformers, circuit breakers, and SCADA systems. They will lead research and development projects related to emerging technologies, manage innovation projects funded by government agencies, and prepare technical reports on these projects. The role also involves developing and implementing strategic goals for engineering and construction standards across Indiana and Ohio, ensuring compliance with corporate policies and regulations, and collaborating with internal stakeholders to gather insights and ideas. Candidates will be expected to maintain active memberships in professional societies and may need to travel periodically for inter-office business, site visits, and conferences. Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert on transformers, reactors, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, and other electrical components.
  • Lead R&D, pilot, and standardization projects related to emerging technologies such as IEC 61850 and microgrids.
  • Prepare, submit, implement, and manage innovation projects funded by government agencies.
  • Prepare and present technical papers/reports related to innovation projects and AES best practices.
  • Continuously improve electric rate payer experience and minimize costs by specifying safe and reliable electric materials.
  • Develop and implement strategic goals and tactical initiatives for engineering and construction standards.
  • Manage research and application of AES corporate policies and federal/state regulations.
  • Interface with internal stakeholders to solicit information and ideas.
  • Obtain and maintain professional engineering (PE) licenses in Indiana and Ohio.
  • Manage technical verification and editing for other standards engineers.
  • Join and maintain active membership in professional societies.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; Master's degree is a plus.
  • Lead Engineer: Minimum 8 years of hands-on experience in T&D innovation and engineering.
  • Senior Engineer: Minimum 5 years of practical experience in T&D fields.
  • Engineer: At least 2 years of practical experience; Master's or PhD may qualify without prior experience.
  • Associate Engineer: Entry-level position with no prior experience required.
  • For Lead Engineer, minimum three years of leadership experience in departments or large projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Hold or be willing to pursue PE licenses in Indiana and Ohio; PE license required for Lead Engineer.
  • Familiarity with EMT Software, Hardware-in-the-Loop test labs, and various communication protocols is a plus.
  • Experience with electrical design tools like AutoCAD and MicroStation is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with coding in Python or other programming languages.
  • Experience with National Electric Code (NEC) and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
  • Ability to research and apply national standards maintained by IEEE and ANSI.
