About the position

The Electrical Engineer - Protection and Relaying is responsible for relay protection and control engineering, focusing on the detailed design for high voltage substations and transmission projects. This role involves guiding the development and implementation of projects from concept to completion, ensuring that engineering deliverables meet customer specifications and industry standards. The engineer will also create CAD drawings, participate in customer meetings, and assist in factory testing and commissioning of equipment.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for relay protection and control engineering including detailed design for high voltage substations and transmission.
• Develop and implement projects from basic concept to completion.
• Provide guidance in preparing engineering deliverables for electric substation projects.
• Create one- & three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Develop relay settings and calculations, control and relaying panel layouts and specifications.
• Design SCADA systems and communications interfaces including RTUs, HMIs, and IEDs.
• Assist in auxiliary system design including batteries, chargers, and load centers.
• Develop sketch drawings for marketing proposals.
• Participate in customer meetings to discuss technical issues and gather information.
• Review equipment design to ensure it meets customer specifications.
• Create and maintain project schedules for drawing submittals.
• Create detailed job-specific CAD drawings for customer submittal.
• Review project-specific drawings with the Manager of Engineering.
• Prepare and issue engineering bill of materials and drawing packages for production.
• Assist during factory assembly and testing of project-specific equipment.
• Communicate with customers regarding technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
• Issue final As Built project-specific drawings to customers after testing.
• Develop relay protection and control schemes for high voltage circuit breakers.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering; higher education is a plus.
• 5+ years of experience as an electrical engineer in projects involving electrical relay protection and control schemes.
• Proficient knowledge of electrical theory and electrical control system design.
• Experience with PLC programming and manufacturing is a plus.
• Complete understanding and training in CAD software design; knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical preferred.
• Trained in commercial software programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Project, Adobe Acrobat, etc.).
• Thorough knowledge of industry standards for control schemes related to high voltage circuit breakers.
• Understanding of electrical and power distribution systems.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in assigning work to engineering drafters or designers.
• Supervisory experience in checking supplementary designs and details prepared by others.
