About the position

The Electrical Engineer (Mechanisms) at AST SpaceMobile is responsible for defining electrical control requirements for mechanisms, engaging with vendors for implementation quotes, and overseeing the design, manufacturing, and testing processes. This role is crucial for ensuring the successful delivery of engineering, qualification, and flight units for the SpaceMobile mission, which aims to provide global cellular broadband connectivity via a space-based network.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Hold Down & Release Mechanism (HDRM) firing electronics
  • Keeper of requirements
  • Oversee system and/or component contractor(s)
  • Work interfaces with mechanisms/flight software team
  • Prepare development, qualification, acceptance, and flight integration plans
  • Prepare and oversee preparation of mechanisms-related EGSE
  • Lead motor driver electronics
  • Keeper of requirements
  • Oversee motor driver system contractor or design in house if that path is selected
  • Work interfaces with mechanisms team/flight software team
  • Prepare development, qualification, acceptance, and flight integration plans
  • Prepare and oversee preparation of EDSE test electronics
  • Assume additional mechanisms or actuator drive electronics efforts as necessary and as requirements evolve

Requirements

  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card Holder
  • A 4-year degree from an accredited university in an Electrical Engineering-related technical field
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in an Electrical Engineering-related field, preferably with significant experience in HDRM firing, explosive and non-explosive actuators, and motor drive electronics
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team with other engineers
  • Ability to work flexibly and adaptively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills

Nice-to-haves

  • An M.Eng. or MS Degree in an Electrical Engineering field
  • Extensive familiarity with firing circuits and motor drive electronics
  • Strong understanding of spacecraft environments and electronics design requirements
  • Experience with meeting range safety requirements (AFSPCMAN91-710)
  • 7 years of experience in an Electrical Engineering-related field, preferably with significant experience in HDRM firing, explosive and non-explosive actuators, and motor drive electronics
