About the position

The Electrical Engineer at Fairbanks Morse Defense is responsible for the design and development of electrical and control systems for diesel engines and generator sets. This role serves as a subject matter expert for generators and alternators, supporting production, testing, and commissioning processes. The position involves collaboration with various segments of the company, including the Navy, Military Sealift Command, and the Canadian Coast Guard, ensuring high-quality support for naval power technology.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert for specifying, operating, and troubleshooting alternators/generators.
  • Maintain and support engine and generator set control software (Allen Bradley PLC and various proprietary systems).
  • Support engine and generator set manufacturing, assembly, and testing, including troubleshooting electrical and control systems.
  • Develop, review, and update electrical engineering documents such as interconnect drawings, system schematics, instrumentation drawings, procurement drawings, instructions & procedures, and bills of materials.
  • Work with customers to resolve contract deviations and unclear requirements.
  • Support the sales process by reviewing customer specifications, developing compliance matrices, and estimating cost and lead time.
  • Travel domestically and internationally for training, customer visits, supplier visits, and shipboard engine commissioning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, preferably with an emphasis in generators and/or power.
  • Strong preference for knowledge and experience with diesel generator sets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage team and individual workloads effectively through time management and prioritization.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel to interact with customers.
  • EMI experience is a plus.
  • Technical proficiency in French, German, or Danish is a plus.
  • Must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship and attest to not having dual citizenship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with EMI (Electromagnetic Interference).
  • Technical proficiency in additional languages such as French, German, or Danish.
