About the position

The Electrical Engineer position at Leidos involves working within the Ports and Borders (P&B) business unit to design and develop advanced security equipment, including X-ray based systems. The role requires collaboration with a cross-functional engineering team to create innovative solutions for border and transportation security, ensuring products meet rigorous safety and operational standards.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a cross-functional engineering team to develop next-generation X-ray based security equipment.
  • Design PLC-based machine control systems, including circuit design, embedded programming, motion control, and power distribution.
  • Perform sustaining engineering of existing products, addressing obsolescence issues and feature updates.
  • Design circuits and oversee PCB layout, fabrication, and assembly.
  • Produce engineering documentation such as design specifications, interface control documents, schematics, wiring diagrams, and bills of material.
  • Troubleshoot existing and new designs down to the component level, performing root cause analysis.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or similar with 4+ years of professional experience, or equivalent work experience/trainings/certifications in lieu of a degree.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance (US citizenship required).
  • Experience in industrial control system design, including PLCs, machine safety, panel/enclosure design, object sensing, electrical interfaces, circuit protection, communications protocols, and power distribution.
  • Experience with PLC or embedded software development.
  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, function generators, and bench supplies.
  • Comfortable working with and around X-ray radiation producing machines, radioactive materials, high voltage, and heavy machinery.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficient in PLC code, IEC61131 languages.
  • Familiar with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Orcad, PADS, Altium).
  • Knowledge of radiation detection technologies and data acquisition systems.
  • Knowledge of X-ray producing machinery.
  • Experience developing system architectures and designs for complex systems.
