About the position

This full-time, contract Electrical Engineer position is part of the Test and Energization organization within the Commissioning and Testing group at Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). The role involves providing on-site engineering and project assistance for substation construction projects, focusing on the testing and energization of communications and control equipment in high voltage electrical substations, radio stations, and control centers across multiple states.

Responsibilities

  • Perform testing of substation equipment, primarily power circuit breakers, transformers, and static capacitors under guidance.
  • Conduct verification of CT/PT ratio, CT polarity, transformer impedance, power factor for transformers, timing of power circuit breakers, and insulation voltage withstand tests.
  • Test Substation Control equipment including Protective Relaying, SCADA, microwave radio, Transfer Trip, and PLCs with instruction from the BPA lead engineer.
  • Support the design, implementation, maintenance, and improvement of electrical instruments and systems by checking rack wiring and cables.
  • Operate computer-assisted engineering and design software to perform engineering tasks under direction.
  • Gather information for BPA Lead Engineer to create electrical drawings, reports, and calculations.
  • Assist with coordinating construction, installation, maintenance, and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications and codes.
  • Perform detailed calculations to establish construction and installation standards with approval from the BPA Lead Engineer.
  • Inspect completed installations and verify operations to ensure compliance with design and safety standards.
  • Provide troubleshooting and on-site technical support to craft/customer personnel as directed.
  • Collaborate with BPA design staff during the engineering phase to understand design philosophy and provide field information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school is required.
  • 6 months of experience and knowledge of electrical engineering concepts applicable to components and facilities on a regional transmission system is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Nice-to-haves

  • Training or experience in Power Systems Engineering to develop design standards through on-the-job training.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical prints, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
