About the position

The Electrical Engineering Department Manager at John Wood Group is responsible for leading the electrical engineering team focused on biotech and pharmaceutical facilities. This role involves mentoring junior staff, overseeing all phases of electrical design, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of deliverables. The manager will collaborate with various disciplines and clients, develop design standards, and assist in training new engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Function as lead electrical engineer for the Wood US Life Science electrical engineering team.
  • Work independently or lead junior staff as needed.
  • Serve as a technical and professional mentor to junior staff.
  • Guide the electrical design team through all phases of design: feasibility, concept development, preliminary design, detailed design, and construction documentation.
  • Develop electrical design documents for biotech and pharmaceutical facilities.
  • Generate electrical single-line diagrams and panel schedules.
  • Design emergency and back-up power distribution systems including generators and UPS.
  • Create electrical panel layouts and wiring diagrams.
  • Prepare power and lighting plans, calculations, and schedules.
  • Conduct electrical load studies and motor calculations.
  • Design grounding and lightning protection plans and details.
  • Develop telecommunications plans and fire alarm plans.
  • Conduct quality reviews for adequacy and accuracy of all electrical deliverables.
  • Coordinate with multiple disciplines in 2-D and 3-D environments for cable tray routing and lighting fixture layouts.
  • Prepare specifications for electrical equipment and design criteria documents.
  • Perform field surveys and evaluate existing equipment and systems.
  • Review submittals and shop drawings.
  • Assist in the generation and maintenance of Instrument Index and Input/Output (I/O) lists.
  • Respond to construction Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Develop final construction documents including plans, specifications, schedules, and details.
  • Collaborate with the Construction Management Team to mitigate project roadblocks.
  • Assist in reviewing cost estimates from internal and external contractors.
  • Establish effective working relations with colleagues, clients, and officials.
  • Attend client meetings, both virtual and in-person.
  • Assist in developing electrical design standards, details, and templates.
  • On-board and train entry-level and junior electrical staff.

Requirements

  • Registered Professional Engineer required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical engineering.
  • Proficiency in design codes and standards (NFPA, IBC, ASHRAE, IECC, Title 24, UL, etc.).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to multitask.
  • Required computer skills: MS Office, AutoCAD, and Revit 3D modeling.
  • Knowledge of cGMP facility design preferred.

  • Proficiency in SKM Power Tools and Visual Lighting Software.
  • Flexibility to travel (max of 10% annually).
  • Willingness to cross-sector train and assist in electrical design with other offices.
