About the position

The Electrical Estimating Manager at McCarthy Building Co. plays a crucial role in the bid and estimating process for renewable energy projects, particularly in the solar market. This position involves overseeing the entire estimating effort, from reviewing plans and specifications to negotiating prices with contractors and suppliers. The manager will also support commercial construction operations, focusing on solar and other renewable design and construction work, ensuring that projects are accurately estimated and aligned with contractual requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Support the conceptual and detailed design of solar electrical systems.
  • Challenge design concepts and assumptions, presenting ideas to the Precon team.
  • Perform quantity take-offs for projects.
  • Assist in pricing and bidding of commercial, renewable, substation, and battery storage projects.
  • Support the team with overall electrical system design analysis.
  • Communicate with engineers and consultants to clarify scope of work, materials, and schedule requirements.
  • Prepare qualifications and assumptions that align with contractual requirements.
  • Review electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, and studies.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections as necessary.
  • Review milestone design documents to identify and price value alternative opportunities.
  • Participate in the internal estimate review process.
  • Assist with final assembly of estimates for presentation to owners.
  • Collect and organize all bid information for future reference.
  • Aid field operations with change order pricing if needed.
  • Direct, coordinate, and provide information to subcontractors.
  • Prepare contractual exhibits for scope of work for subcontracts.
  • Prepare and submit contract documents for legal and risk reviews.
  • Participate in Design Build, Hard Bid, and GMP budgeting activities.
  • Build relationships with subcontractors and vendors to obtain a competitive advantage.
  • Attend industry events and represent McCarthy professionally.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal McCarthy clients.
  • Keep current with the latest estimating technology and techniques.
  • Implement all applicable Safety Programs and EEO/Affirmative Action Programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering.
  • 2-5 years of equivalent experience in electrical estimating or related field.
  • General knowledge of electrical principles and processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of negotiated bids, hard bids, and GMP processes.
  • Working knowledge of estimating technology and tools such as OST, Accubid, Tra-ser, and BIM related software.
  • Excellent computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Strong math and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail at a high level.
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the solar market or renewable energy sector.
  • Familiarity with estimating software and tools.
  • Knowledge of safety programs and EEO/Affirmative Action Programs.
