About the position

The Lead Electrical Engineer at Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is responsible for designing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, overseeing electrical engineering projects, and ensuring adherence to project budgets and schedules. This role involves collaboration with various engineering disciplines, managing a team of electrical designers, and serving as the primary electrical contact for clients. The position also includes supervisory responsibilities, such as approving timesheets and conducting performance evaluations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the electrical engineering of commercial and utility scale solar projects and ensure budgets are met.
  • Verify incorporation of contractual electrical engineering scope into design and coordinate change orders with project manager.
  • Ensure project deliverable schedules for electrical engineering scope are met.
  • Assist project managers in preparing proposal scope and fees for electrical engineering in response to RFPs.
  • Coordinate with civil engineers, geotechnical/structural engineers, and surveyors on project requirements.
  • Schedule and plan necessary resources to support projects weekly.
  • Lead electrical engineering design and creation of construction documents for projects.
  • Oversee project electrical team resources and ensure staff perform electrical calculations and studies.
  • Coordinate with clients, utilities, and code enforcement officers.
  • Conduct QA/QC of design work for projects where you are the lead electrical engineer.
  • Maintain awareness of available equipment and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering teams in other offices as needed.
  • Support construction projects by responding to contractor and owner requests, including RFIs and submittal reviews.
  • Assist Market Directors with marketing efforts and creation of marketing materials related to electrical engineering work.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor graduate engineers, staff engineers, and design technicians.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Renewable Engineering Program.
  • Knowledge of NEC and NESC.
  • Proficiency in electrical power system modeling programs.
  • Approximately 4-10 years of experience in electrical distribution, generation, or construction design.
  • Ability to read and create construction drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing.
  • Experience with project budgets, invoices, change orders, and progress reports.
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Limited proficiency in AutoCAD.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the design and construction of utility scale PV and/or wind plants.
  • NABCEP Certification.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Electrical PE License or ability to be licensed in multiple states.
  • Experience with energy storage systems (battery, flywheel, or capacitor).
  • Proficiency with ETAP, CYMCAP, WinIGS, and/or DigSilent PowerFactory for modeling electrical power systems.
  • Experience with PVsyst, Helioscope, SAM, or other PV production modeling software.
  • Experience with Helios 3D, PVcase, RatedPower, SolarFarmer, or other PV site layout software.
  • Experience with PSS/E, PSCAD, EMTP, or similar software for transient/dynamic modeling.
