About the position

The Electrical Power Engineer will play a crucial role in the design and implementation of electrical power systems. This position is essential for the Power Delivery Team, which is involved in various projects related to power delivery and systems, including transmission, distribution, substations, and renewable energy integration. The Electrical Power Engineer will work closely with a team of world-class engineers, researchers, investors, and developers at Fervo Energy, a company dedicated to making geothermal energy a key pillar of a climate-friendly energy future. The role requires a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and the ability to apply them to real-world projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations throughout all phases of project development. In this role, the Electrical Power Engineer will assist with engineering, financial, and technical analysis for a variety of power-related engineering projects. Responsibilities include conducting power system planning and operations analysis, performing load flow and short circuit studies, and applying fundamental electrical engineering principles to project planning and analysis. The engineer will also analyze life-cycle project impacts, interface with various stakeholders, and provide technical support on multi-discipline projects. The position demands strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively while ensuring that all projects meet the necessary standards and timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with engineering, financial, and technical analysis for a variety of power-related engineering projects
  • Conduct power system planning and operations analysis, including reliability and economic dispatch
  • Perform load flow, short circuit, arc flash, protection coordination, transient stability, and switching transient studies using power system modeling software
  • Apply fundamental electrical engineering principles to project planning and analysis
  • Analyze life-cycle project impacts by developing cost assumptions and engineering performance estimates
  • Ensure assigned projects comply with all applicable company and electrical industry standards and recommendations throughout all phases of the project, e.g. NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA, API, NEMA, etc.
  • Interface with engineering contractors, plant personnel, E&I vendors, construction contractors, and engineers through all project phases
  • Provide electrical and power technical support on multi-discipline projects
  • Provide input to scope and design of assigned projects; Identify front-end engineering & design (FEED) and Implementation deliverables necessary for the electrical scope of the project
  • Provide timely feedback on deliverables/estimates to achieve schedule milestones on assigned projects
  • Communicate site preferences and approved manufacturers to engineering contractors on the front-end of each project
  • Take ownership of electrical work packages and work directly with the engineering contractor to oversee progress at regular intervals
  • Review and approve equipment spec sheets prior to procurement and support the purchasing of equipment and materials
  • Support development of company electrical equipment specification, engineering and installation standards

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of standard electrical engineering techniques, principles, and procedures
  • Working knowledge of NESC and NEC in typical capital projects
  • Familiarity with electrical analysis programs (ETAP, SKM)
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment, with demonstrated critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team-building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong knowledge of electrical power systems design
  • 4+ years of experience in electrical power systems design
  • Experience with renewable energy integration and coal-fired power plant retirement studies
  • Project management experience
