About the position

Seattle City Light's Generation Electrical Engineering Section is seeking a high performing, licensed Professional Electrical Engineer, from any state, to join our team. We have a great variety of interesting and challenging projects to work on and are pleased to advertise this position. If you're bringing your PE from another state, you will have a year to obtain your Washington State PE by exam or comity. As the selected engineer, you will report to Newhalem, Washington and be assigned to support the day-to-day operations of the three power plants of the Skagit Hydroelectric Project. The Skagit project is in the North Cascades National Park and you will have the option to live in the company town of Newhalem depending on available space. In addition to day-to-day support, you will be assigned capital projects to design and work collaboratively with field crews to install and test new equipment related to their design. We are interested in individuals with a positive attitude, good people skills and broad experience working on hydroelectric generation facilities. This position reports to the Generation Electrical Engineering Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Work on hydroelectric generators, transformers, circuit breakers, governors, and exciters.
  • Manage balance of plant (BOP) equipment such as batteries, and AC power distribution and SCADA systems.
  • Oversee plant controls, automation, and relay protection.
  • Handle equipment associated auxiliary systems including hydraulic power units, standby generators, and compressors.
  • Control spillway and intake gates.
  • Troubleshoot, commission, inspect, and install electrical systems.
  • Lead technical role working with on-site skilled trades.
  • Review and stamp electrical design packages.
  • Estimate projects, develop, and present proposals.
  • Conduct condition assessment, performance monitoring, data analysis, and preventative maintenance in hydroelectric generating stations.
  • Lead multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Manage projects and several concurrent mandates on schedule and within budget.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC reliability standards as they relate to the operation of Bulk Electric System assets.
  • Commit to safe work practices and experience working with safe work procedures.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and report writing skills.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Total of 6 years of progressively responsible, difficult and highly complex electrical engineering experience in the Power Industry.
  • Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Washington or ability to obtain it within 12 months of hire.
  • Current Washington State Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with hydroelectric generators, and associated Exciters, Governors, Relay Protection, Plant Controls and Automation.
  • Recognition of values associated with excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge of and direct experience with NERC reliability standards as they relate to the operation of Bulk Electric System assets.
  • Operations experience with remote generating facilities.
  • Experience in legacy electrical systems and equipment.
  • Good interpersonal, technical writing and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient using AutoCAD to prepare Engineering Design Packages.
