About the position

The Electrical Power and Control Systems (EPCS) Department at Penn State University is seeking Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems (EPPS) engineers to develop advanced electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems for undersea vehicles. This role involves working with multidisciplinary teams to design, integrate, and test energy storage systems and electric motor controllers, contributing to projects for the Department of Defense and related applications.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the full life cycle design and development process for electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems.
  • Participate in system requirements identification, flow-down, and functional allocation.
  • Execute detailed design stages including market surveys, analysis of alternatives, and functional design documents.
  • Capture approved hardware designs using CAD tools and demonstrate design compliance during integration exercises.
  • Test EPPS designs using hardware-in-the-loop methods to support integration with larger systems.
  • Support laboratory and field testing of prototype EPPS to demonstrate final design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline.
  • Knowledge and use of CAD tools for design and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within or lead a technical team.
  • Hands-on experience with electronics concepts and hardware integration.
  • Previous design experience in low and high voltage power conversion and battery systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • LabVIEW and Matlab experience (Simulink, Stateflow, RT-LAB).
  • Mechanical CAD tools experience including Siemens NX and Solidworks.
  • Electrical CAD tools experience including Altium Design Suite.
  • Experience with battery management systems (BMS).
  • Experience operating battery test equipment (Aerovironment, Arbin).
  • Familiarity with embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog firmware languages.
  • Prior high voltage training and working experience.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $76,700.00 - $129,500.00.
