About the position

The Electrical Propulsion and Power Systems Engineer position at Penn State University involves working within the Electrical Power and Control Systems Department to develop innovative electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems for undersea vehicles. The role encompasses the full life cycle of design and development, including system requirements identification, detailed design execution, and testing of prototypes. Engineers will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that designs meet operational requirements and are effectively integrated into larger systems.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the full life cycle design and development process for electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems.
  • Participate in system requirements identification, flow-down, and functional allocation.
  • Execute detailed design stages including market surveys, analysis of alternatives, and test plans/reports.
  • Capture approved hardware designs using CAD tools and demonstrate design compliance during integration exercises.
  • Test EPPS designs using hardware-in-the-loop methods to support system integration.
  • Support laboratory and field testing of prototype EPPS.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Design experience in low and high voltage power conversion and battery systems.
  • Knowledge and use of CAD tools for design concept and procurement documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within or lead a technical team.
  • Hands-on experience with electronics concepts and hardware integration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with LabVIEW and Matlab (Simulink, Stateflow, RT-LAB).
  • Familiarity with mechanical CAD tools like Siemens NX and Solidworks.
  • Experience with electrical CAD tools such as Altium Design Suite.
  • Knowledge of battery management systems (BMS).
  • Prior high voltage training and experience.
  • Experience with battery test equipment (Aerovironment, Arbin).
  • Proficiency in embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog firmware languages.
