About the position

The Electrical Safety Engineer at Brookhaven National Laboratory will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of electrical work associated with the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). This position involves developing safety-related documents, conducting inspections, and collaborating with engineers and safety personnel to enforce safety regulations and standards. The engineer will also be responsible for training others in lockout/tagout procedures and ensuring compliance with safety protocols during the planning and execution of electrical work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead job planning for all electrical work ensuring execution in accordance with BNL and EIC ES&H policy and procedures.
  • Perform weekly worker oversights.
  • Perform biweekly Lockout tagout observations.
  • Be present in the field as much as possible observing the work performed and be ready to give advice on how to improve safety during the task at hand.
  • Ensure all workers training requirements are completed before any work is performed.
  • Become an expert in all of the required BNL safety related documentation.
  • Work closely with the EIC safety department.
  • Perform as one of the EIC Electrical Equipment Inspectors for new equipment and support electrical safety related to rack mounted and standalone electrical equipment.
  • Perform as a Lockout Tagout Evaluator.
  • Become trained as a Work Control Coordinator/ Independent Electrical Work Reviewer.
  • Plan all removal, installation and testing jobs and maintain all of the associated paperwork.
  • Participate in safety reviews of EIC systems including the cable tray system as well as power supply, vacuum, instrumentation and magnet systems.
  • Provide safety status reports on these projects through to completion.
  • Maintain an environment conducive to openness, collaboration, and respect for all.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Excellent written and oral skills and proficient with MS Office including PowerPoint (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
  • Knowledge of electronic test equipment including function generators, oscilloscopes, and multimeters

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in engineering or physics
  • Minimum three (3) years progressively responsible related work experience
  • Knowledge of NEC Code Article 392
  • Knowledge of UL 508A. UL Standard for the construction of Industrial Control Panels
  • Knowledge of other UL standards and OSHA Safety Codes
