About the position

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking an Electrical Staff Engineer to support our Electrical Engineering Team. This position is focused on the interconnection and design of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging facilities and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities. The role involves various responsibilities including the layout of BESS sites and EV charger sites, selecting and sizing appropriate distribution and collection equipment, and determining interconnection requirements. The Electrical Staff Engineer will work closely with the Project Lead and Senior Engineers to ensure adherence to firm standards and consistency across projects. Additionally, this position includes oversight of interns, electrical designers, and drafters involved in the projects. The role can be based in any of our offices located in Denver, Minneapolis, Madison, or Fort Worth. The Electrical Staff Engineer will support the electrical engineering aspects of EV Charging Facilities and Energy Storage Projects. This includes reviewing utility service and interconnection requirements for various utilities and assembling the technical portions of service and interconnect applications for clients. The engineer will also coordinate with other project disciplines, such as civil engineers, geotechnical and structural engineers, and surveyors, to ensure comprehensive project execution. Responsibilities also include performing electrical engineering design and creating construction documents for projects, conducting electrical calculations and studies such as short circuit and load flow calculations, and maintaining awareness of currently available equipment and industry best practices. Collaboration with electrical engineering teams in other offices will be necessary as projects and workload sharing dictate.

Responsibilities

  • Support electrical engineering portions of EV Charging Facilities and Energy Storage Projects
  • Review utility service/interconnection requirements for various utilities and assemble technical portions of service/interconnect applications for clients
  • Coordinate with other project disciplines including civil engineers, geotechnical/structural engineers, and surveyors
  • Perform electrical engineering design and creation of construction documents for projects
  • Responsible for performing electrical calculations and studies such as short circuit, load flow calculations and voltage drop
  • Maintain awareness of currently available equipment and industry best practices
  • Collaborate with and support electrical engineering teams in other offices as projects and workload sharing between offices dictates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Renewable Engineering Program
  • Knowledge of NEC requirements
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of an electrical power system modeling program(s)
  • Approximately 2 - 6 years of experience in the design of electrical distribution, generation, and or general electrical construction
  • Working knowledge and ability to read and create service/interconnection application packages, construction drawings and specification packages
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Professional appearance with excellent written and verbal communications skills, including ability to write detailed technical reports with minimal oversight
  • Strong work ethic along with a positive attitude
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Self-motivated with an ability to balance multiple projects under tight deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Ability to use AutoCAD in at least a limited capacity.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience and knowledge of overall design and construction of renewable power projects
  • Experience with EV Chargers
  • Experience in lighting design and photometrics analysis using AGI32 or Visual Lighting
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Electrical PE License or ability to be licensed in the future
  • Experience with energy storage systems (battery, flywheel, or capacitor)
  • Experience with ETAP, CYMCAP, WinIGS, and/or DigSilent PowerFactory to model electrical power systems and perform load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, grounding, thermal, and protective device coordination studies and analysis
  • Experience with Homer Grid/Pro modeling software
  • Experience with microgrid design, back-up reciprocating generator system design, or data center design
  • Experience with PSS/E, PSCAD, EMTP, or similar software and performing transient/dynamic modeling and studies or power systems.
