About the position

The Electrical Studies Engineer will focus on performing electrical studies on substations and reactive power studies, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of electrical infrastructure. This role requires a strong background in electrical engineering, particularly in power systems, and involves conducting various studies, developing system models, and providing technical support for projects.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct power flow, short-circuit, harmonics, and stability studies for substations.
  • Perform load flow analysis to determine system performance and identify areas of improvement.
  • Develop detailed electrical system models using industry-standard software tools (e.g., Cymcap, PSCAD, PSS/E, ETAP, or ASPEN).
  • Analyze system faults and transient stability to enhance grid reliability.
  • Design and engineer MV and HV substations.
  • Perform power system modelling and studies including protection coordination, short circuit, load flow, arc flash hazard studies using software.
  • Prepare technical specifications for MV and HV electrical equipment, review and comment on vendor drawings.
  • Perform cost estimations and bids evaluations.
  • Supervise through decision making for North American standards and regulatory bodies including CSA, NEC, NFPA, ANSI, IEEE, NPCC and NERC.
  • Evaluate reactive power needs and compensation strategies.
  • Design and analyze capacitor banks, reactors, and other reactive power equipment.
  • Optimize voltage profiles and power factor correction to ensure efficient operation of the electrical grid.
  • Provide technical support and expertise for substation and transmission projects.
  • Collaborate with project managers and other engineering teams to ensure projects meet technical standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare detailed engineering reports, documentation, and presentations for various stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, company policies, and safety regulations.
  • Participate in safety reviews, audits, and risk assessments to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices.
  • Propose and implement innovative solutions to improve system performance and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; a Master's degree is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with a focus on power systems and substations.
  • Proficiency with power system analysis software (e.g., PSS/E, ETAP, ASPEN).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with renewable energy integration.
  • Knowledge of IEC, IEEE, and NERC standards.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and grid automation technologies.
  • Project management experience.
