About the position

The Electrical Substation Engineer at AECOM will support the Energy Business Line by providing electrical engineering services across various sectors, including transmission, power distribution, and renewables. This role offers the opportunity to work remotely or from various office locations, focusing on the design and development of substations and related systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in electrical power engineering and leadership experience, with responsibilities that include project support, design work, and mentorship of junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Support electrical engineering design work on assigned projects under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Assist in the development of substation and switching station physical designs, including AIS and GIS.
  • Create substation general arrangement drawings, elevations, and sections.
  • Develop plan drawings such as grounding plans, raceway plans, and cable tray plans.
  • Prepare one-line and three-line diagrams, protective relay and metering diagrams, and AC/DC schematics.
  • Design panel layouts, equipment layouts, and sectional views.
  • Generate connection diagrams, bill of materials, and cable schedules.
  • Conduct DC power distribution design and develop construction and equipment specifications.
  • Compile electrical lists including cable and conduit schedules, load lists, and equipment lists.
  • Perform calculations for grounding analysis, cable sizing, conduit sizing, transformer sizing, battery sizing, lightning protection, and bus bracing.
  • Conduct power system studies including load flow, short circuit, protective coordination, and arc flash analysis.
  • Assist in the development of design schedules and budgets for electrical engineering work activities.
  • Support projects during construction, start-up, and commissioning phases.
  • Review engineering work performed by peers and provide mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Participate in field walks, create field sketches, and take necessary dimensions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • 4+ years of relevant substation experience.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional engineering licensure.
  • 6+ years of relevant substation experience preferred.
  • Strong familiarity with industry codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA, etc.).
  • Experience with California Electric Utilities.
  • Experience with retrofit or brownfield projects.
  • Strong written and verbal skills with an ability to lead engineering tasks.
  • Experience on full EPC, Design/Build projects from start to finish.
  • Startup and commissioning field experience.
  • Power systems analysis software experience (SKM, EasyPower, ETAP).
  • Exposure to supporting renewable generation projects.
  • Success in working with remote teams.
