About the position

The Electrical System Engineer position at Los Alamos National Laboratory focuses on supporting the nuclear mission by implementing regulatory requirements and engineering solutions for nuclear facilities. The role involves system engineering, design engineering, project engineering, and safety basis functions, ensuring compliance with various standards and regulations. The position is available at two levels, Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 and 2, with responsibilities increasing at the higher level. Engineers will work independently and collaboratively to meet the laboratory's mission and improve work processes.

Responsibilities

  • Implement nuclear facility engineering regulatory requirements including the Nuclear Safety Management Rule and DOE Orders.
  • Perform system engineering, design engineering, project engineering, and safety basis functions at LANL and Nevada nuclear facilities.
  • Define requirements for nuclear facilities, safety systems, operations equipment, and procedures.
  • Integrate with programmatic, operations, maintenance, and project management personnel to ensure nuclear facility requirements are met.
  • Identify and lead activities within a nuclear facility engineering discipline.
  • Utilize nuclear engineering technology to accomplish work and improve work processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • 2 years of practical work experience in engineering.
  • Knowledge of analysis and calculation techniques to support engineered solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions verbally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software products (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook).

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of controls related to equipment operation such as PLCs and relay control.
  • Knowledge of low and medium voltage electrical systems in commercial, industrial, or nuclear facilities.
  • Experience with supporting safety analyses and hazards evaluations.
  • Experience in the use of SKM software.
