About the position

The Electrical Technician (Engineering Technician III) position is responsible for evaluating, repairing, and maintaining state-maintained electrical traffic control devices, highway lighting installations, and components of deep well and pumping station systems. This role involves performing tests, field evaluations, and emergency repairs, ensuring the operational status of various electronic devices, and documenting maintenance activities. The position is part of the Illinois Department of Transportation, which emphasizes a commitment to public service and employee development.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs electrical traffic control devices and pump systems properly and efficiently.
  • Evaluates the operational status of traffic control equipment and pump systems.
  • Monitors current developments in electronic equipment relating to traffic control devices and pump systems.
  • Documents all emergency repairs and scheduled routine maintenance activities performed.
  • Performs proper corrective repairs for emergency calls on all electronic devices.
  • Assists and coordinates contractual maintenance work.
  • Checks and evaluates all conflict monitors and railroad pre-emptors on a routine basis.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on traffic signal controllers.
  • Develops and implements various traffic signal timing programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or job related technical/science curriculum PLUS thirty months of engineering experience OR six years of engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic, electrical, and mechanical traffic control devices and systems.
  • Experience with components and parts of electronic and electrical devices used in highway lighting, pump systems, and traffic control.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, electrical drawings, timing sheets and manuals.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and asset management applications.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules, regulations and practices required in electrical and electronic work.
