The Electrical Trades I Traffic position at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is a vital role within the Region 4 Traffic Signals Electrical Crew, based in Greeley, Colorado. This position involves assisting skilled electricians in the installation, repair, and maintenance of various electrical systems, including traffic signals, highway lighting, and communication systems. The work is essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation infrastructure across northeastern Colorado. The role requires responding to emergencies involving signalized intersections and roadway lighting, providing critical support during incidents that may affect public safety. In this position, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining the regional traffic signal inventory and associated devices, as well as performing electrical work in accordance with the National Electric Code and other relevant regulations. Your duties will include assisting with the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices, operating specialized equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety guidelines. You will also be expected to document your work using computers and other office equipment, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the team. The work environment is dynamic, with a typical schedule of five 8-hour days, although this may change based on operational needs. The position requires a significant amount of fieldwork, with approximately 80% of the time spent outside the office. You will be required to work at heights, respond to emergencies outside regular hours, and may need to travel for training and work assignments. Responsibilities

  • Assist with and perform installations, maintenance, repair, and inspection of electrical infrastructure, including electrical distribution services and roadway lighting.
  • Operate equipment such as aerial devices, backhoes, loaders, and other specialized tools.
  • Locate underground cables and utilities for contractors and maintenance; operate utility locating equipment.
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices and systems, including traffic signals and variable message signs.
  • Install and maintain temporary traffic control devices in accordance with policies and standards.
  • Assist with communication systems for intelligent transportation systems, including video monitoring and fiber optics.
  • Use computers for documentation and communication, including time sheets and job journals.
  • Follow safety guidelines and use appropriate personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • At least two years of progressively responsible electrical experience in commercial or industrial electrical construction.
  • Experience in process control, programmable logic controllers, traffic signals, and troubleshooting.
  • Satisfactory completion of a formalized electrician apprenticeship may substitute for required experience.
  • Appropriate electrician education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.
