About the position

The Electrical Validation Engineer at PACCAR will be responsible for managing validation projects for vehicle electrical components and systems. This role involves defining test requirements, designing and constructing lab test setups, and documenting results. The successful candidate will communicate with various levels of management, external suppliers, customers, and project stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met. The position requires a proactive approach to project management, with the engineer expected to plan, coordinate, and conduct projects of moderate scope with minimal supervision. In this role, the engineer will analyze project requests, discuss requirements with requestors, and formulate preliminary project plans, budgets, and schedules. They will design fixtures and specify instrumentation, equipment, and data requirements necessary for testing. The engineer will also assemble the resources required for testing and work to resolve any resource conflicts that may arise. Participation in the setup of tests is crucial, ensuring that test equipment and instrumentation meet specified requirements and performing preliminary data checks. Data collection and analysis are key components of this position, and the engineer will be responsible for writing reports that incorporate results, conclusions, and recommendations. The role may involve undertaking larger projects with appropriate supervision and taking responsibility for major program activities. The engineer will also be expected to develop and improve test methodologies and may present results of tests or investigative projects to divisions or management personnel. Establishing and maintaining cooperative and productive work relations with all other departments is essential, as is effective communication regarding work progress, support, problems, scheduling conflicts, or opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts projects of moderate scope with minimal supervision.
  • Analyzes project requests, discusses project requirements with requestors, and formulates preliminary project plans, budgets, and schedules.
  • Designs fixtures and specifies instrumentation, equipment, and data requirements.
  • Assembles resources required for testing; works to resolve resource conflicts.
  • Participates in setup of tests, verifies that test equipment and instrumentation meets specified requirements and performs preliminary data checks.
  • Participates in data collection and analysis.
  • Writes reports, as appropriate, incorporating results, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Undertakes tasks on projects of significant scope; may undertake larger projects with appropriate supervision.
  • Develops and improves test methodologies.
  • May present results of test or investigative projects to divisions or management personnel.
  • Fosters good communications and establishes cooperative work relations with all departments.
  • Communicates with manager, peers, and division personnel about work progress, support, problems, scheduling conflicts, or opportunities.

Requirements

  • Minimum four years of experience validating electrical and embedded control systems or similar applicable experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuit analysis fundamentals.
  • Experience using typical electrical lab equipment (digital voltmeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc).
  • Familiarity with Controller Area Network (CAN) operation, especially J1939 protocol.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to summarize technical issues and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to manage personal workload and willingness, flexibility and initiative to respond to shifting time and project demands.
  • Self-directed, excellent analysis and technical judgment required.
  • Strong presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • LABView, Kvaser T-Programming, and/or MATLAB experience.
  • Experience with electric vehicle powertrains and battery systems.
  • Automotive industry testing and validation experience.
