About the position

The Electrician 2 position at the Marion Correctional Institution involves overseeing and performing electrical maintenance and repair work within a correctional facility. The role requires a thorough knowledge of the electrician trade and includes responsibilities such as leading lower-level electricians, maintaining electrical systems, and ensuring compliance with security regulations. This position is crucial for maintaining a safe and functional environment for both staff and incarcerated individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Act as lead worker over lower-level electricians and/or crew and/or incarcerated individuals engaged in installation, maintenance and repair of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.
  • Installs, tests, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls and equipment such as motors, appliances, fans, transformers, heating and cooling equipment, fire and other alarm/security systems, elevators and switches.
  • Determines and completes materials needed, cost estimates, and submits requests to purchase.
  • Reads blueprints and/or schematic diagrams; maintains inventory of electrical supplies.
  • Maintains tool count of tools used by incarcerated individuals and completes tool control forms daily.
  • Performs other maintenance and/or miscellaneous duties including semi-skilled carpentry, painting, electrical, sheet metal, and HVAC work.
  • Ensures compliance with security regulations.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, tests, modifies and/or maintains basic telecommunications and/or electronic data processing equipment in an institutional setting.
  • Serves on institutional committees and attends training, seminars, and/or meetings.
  • Performs security functions as required, such as man-down, shakedown, and inmate movement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including snow and ice removal and grass cutting.

Requirements

  • 18 months training or 18 months verifiable experience in electrical work under supervision of an experienced electrician.
  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and in reading and writing common English vocabulary.
  • 6 months experience as Electrician 1, 52281, or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a correctional facility environment.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations related to electrical work.
