About the position

As a Diesel Electrician, you will be a key member of a team responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing electrical systems in diesel-electric locomotives. This role is crucial for ensuring the safe and reliable transportation of goods across North America. You will conduct scheduled inspections, perform maintenance tasks, and troubleshoot malfunctions in locomotive control circuits, all while adhering to safety standards and compliance regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize schematics and location circuit plans to conduct scheduled electrical inspections and circuit tests on various components.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of electrical components in locomotive cabs or electrical compartments, adhering to company and industry standards.
  • Carry out equipment maintenance in accordance with prescribed guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical systems and components to determine the root cause of problems.
  • Coordinate work activities and plan the necessary steps to complete tasks, considering equipment requirements.
  • Utilize shop machinery, equipment, and tools effectively and safely.
  • Communicate technical information, job procedure recommendations, and other relevant work-related details verbally and in writing.
  • Foster positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, contractors, and customers.
  • Handle conflicting opinions diplomatically and maintain professionalism.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, operational protocols, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines.
  • Fulfill any additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Proficiency in keyboarding
  • Competence in basic mathematics
  • Background in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors, or possession of a current journeyman's electrical card
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and prints
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective information delivery to coworkers and supervisors
  • Experience in comprehending and following instructions, such as operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents
  • Successful completion of an assessment in English before proceeding to the interview stage.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of a recognized formal electrical training program (e.g., training provided by a community college, trade/vocational school, or military institution)
  • Possession of relevant certifications and/or licenses as an electrician
  • An Associate's degree in electricity or electronics
  • Demonstrated experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions
  • Proficiency in handling large motor generators and/or high-voltage circuitry
  • Proven expertise in working with electronics and/or electro-mechanical systems
  • Previous experience in an environment that necessitates the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection
  • Familiarity with working around, on, and with moving heavy equipment
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends
  • Ability and willingness to work in confined and/or small spaces.
