About the position

The Electrician - Licensed position at Western Michigan University involves providing highly skilled craft labor to maintain the University's electrical distribution center and system, which operates at voltages up to 600 volts. The role requires expertise in electrical systems, including installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical components, as well as ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain underground vaults and pole-mounted subsystems up to 120 feet above ground level.
  • Pump water out of vaults and inspect connections between spliced wires.
  • Remove deteriorated or damaged insulation from splices/cables and replace insulation and retape connections.
  • Inspect pole-mounted transformers for loose connections, leaking fluid silicon coolant, and burn marks or corrosion.
  • Tighten loose connections and replace damaged insulation and taping.
  • Maintain exterior lighting and install, repair, and replace electrical components carrying 120-600 volts in building electrical systems.
  • Maintain and repair conduit and wiring, pulling out damaged conduit and installing new conduit and wiring.
  • Identify operating problems in building/motor control panels and correct them.
  • Maintain the work area, tools, equipment, supplies, and assigned vehicles in a neat and orderly condition.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and safety regulations.
  • Sufficient writing and mathematical skills to prepare estimates and supply requisitions.
  • Completion of a registered apprenticeship program or an established, certified training program recognized by the University.
  • Possession of a State of Michigan Electrician's license.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job and use the tools of the trade.
  • Completion of a physical examination administered by the employer's designated physician.
