About the position

The Electrician Senior at the University of Kansas is responsible for performing highly skilled tasks in the planning, installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of electrical systems, wiring, machines, and equipment. This role involves leading less skilled maintenance employees and ensuring compliance with electrical codes and safety standards. The position requires extensive knowledge of electrical distribution systems, particularly 15kv systems, and involves both hands-on work and supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lays out, installs, and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
  • Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste and ensure safety.
  • Works from diagrams, job specifications, or blueprints to execute tasks.
  • Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit.
  • Pulls wiring through conduit and splices wire as needed.
  • Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment using hand tools.
  • Inspects and tests electrical distribution equipment and wiring for compliance with codes.
  • Examines wires and auxiliary equipment to determine conformance to work orders.
  • Tests lines, transformers, and other distribution equipment to locate electrical disturbances.
  • Maintains and repairs various types of streetlights and electrical components.
  • Trains and instructs other shop personnel and acts as a lead worker.
  • Completes work order paperwork and informs supervisor of work status.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
  • Three years of journeyman level experience as an electrician, with two years in 15kv electrical distribution systems.
  • Certificate of completion from a vocational school or an associate's degree may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Valid driver's license required at the time of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience reading and interpreting sketches, blueprints, and job specifications.
  • Experience with voltages up to 12470.
  • Experience working with conduit.
  • Usage of electrical test equipment.
  • Previous experience in a college or university setting.
