About the position

The Electrician position involves performing journey-level, skilled work in electrical construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting of municipal facilities. This includes working with electric generating and distribution equipment, water and wastewater utility apparatus, traffic signals, streetlights, and building equipment. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of electrical systems and the ability to respond to emergency calls, evaluate problems, and perform troubleshooting on electrical equipment. The Electrician will be responsible for installing, servicing, testing, and repairing various electrical components such as transformers, meters, motors, motor controls, and alarm systems. Additionally, the position entails performing maintenance work on high-voltage transformers, circuit breakers, and switches, as well as maintaining water and wastewater facility equipment and storm pumping facilities. The Electrician will also be expected to assist in the maintenance of City-owned and leased communications equipment, locate and recommend solutions for radio interference, and perform other duties related to the operation of the department and the City. The position requires a high degree of aptitude for electrical and mechanical work, the ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, and the capability to prepare and write reports. Safe work practices are essential, especially when working with high voltage, and the Electrician must establish preventative maintenance programs and maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Perform journey-level skilled work in electrical construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting of municipal facilities.
  • Install, service, test, and repair transformers, meters, motors, motor controls, and alarm systems.
  • Perform substation maintenance work on high-voltage transformers, circuit breakers, and switches.
  • Maintain water and wastewater facility equipment and storm pumping facilities.
  • Answer emergency calls during and outside of normal working hours and evaluate City emergency problems.
  • Locate high and low voltage cable faults and test high-voltage cable prior to energizing.
  • Assist in the maintenance of City-owned and leased communications equipment and locate radio interference issues.
  • Establish preventative maintenance programs and keep appropriate records.

Requirements

  • Experience as a journey-level Electrician, typically obtained through a recognized apprenticeship and 48 months of experience or 8,000 hours in the field.
  • Experience with solid state circuitry and computer-based control systems is required.
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Nice-to-haves
