About the position

The Electrician position at the Columbus Civic Center is a critical role that involves a variety of electrical maintenance and repair tasks. This position is event-driven and requires availability seven days a week, from 12:00 AM to 12:00 PM, depending on the needs of the center. The electrician will be responsible for ensuring that all electrical systems are functioning properly and safely, which includes changing light bulbs and ballasts, replacing faulty receptacles, switches, contactors, breakers, motors, and belts. The role also involves assisting other maintenance personnel, such as plumbers and HVAC technicians, to ensure the overall functionality of the facility. In addition to routine electrical work, the electrician will be tasked with repairing cell locks and sliding doors, performing plumbing and minor HVAC duties, and maintaining kitchen equipment and fire alarms. The position requires the electrician to determine the supplies needed for various tasks and to supervise and transport inmates as part of their duties. The electrician will also assist with special projects, such as installing temporary electrical services for sporting events and community festivals, and must be knowledgeable in connecting cam-locks and repairing or replacing speaker controls, cameras, monitors, and electric motors. The ideal candidate will possess a strong knowledge of electrical supplies and materials, national electrical codes, and supervisory techniques. Skills in reading voltage meters, blueprints, and electric schematics are essential, as well as proficiency in electrical wiring, pipe running, wire pulling, and transformer hookup. The electrician must also demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills, ensuring clear interaction with team members and other departments.

Responsibilities

  • Change light bulbs and ballasts.
  • Replace faulty receptacles, switches, contactors, breakers, motors, and belts.
  • Assist plumbers, HVAC technicians, telephone technicians, and maintenance representatives as needed.
  • Repair cell locks and sliding doors.

  • Determine supplies needed to complete tasks.
  • Supervise and transport inmates.
  • Assist with sporting events and special projects by installing and maintaining temporary electrical services.

  • Repair or replace speaker controls, cameras, monitors, and electric motors.
  • Work late at night if needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia.
