About the position

The position involves collaborating with faculty, staff, and students in the design and construction of custom electronics for research experiments at Indiana University and collaborating institutions. The role focuses on developing technical documentation, contributing to research in various physics fields, and providing support for advanced laboratory courses. Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with co-workers, management, research faculty, staff, and graduate students in the design and construction of custom electronics for experiments.
  • Develops technical documentation for electronics and assists faculty and/or students with research publications.
  • Makes contributions to research in neutrino physics, neutron physics, high energy physics, and more.
  • Develops and services equipment for advanced laboratory courses in the Physics Department.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and constructs electronics and/or electronic systems in support of research experiments.
  • Provides estimates for labor and material costs associated with system design and construction.
  • Oversees the construction and installation of systems and participates in proposals for future construction projects.
  • Consults with faculty, staff, and students on design and construction problems of research instrumentation.
  • Repairs, tests, and adjusts instrumentation to ensure optimal working order.
  • Collaborates with co-workers and management to execute instrumentation development to support research objectives.
  • Maintains and prepares documentation for electronics and improves the performance of existing research systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, physics, or related field.
  • 2 years in electronics design or related experience.
  • Proficient communication skills.
  • High degree of professionalism and time management skills.
  • High commitment to quality and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of complex electronics design and advanced understanding of components functionality.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of design software and design programming.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possesses a high degree of initiative.
  • Excellent working knowledge of physics and electrical engineering principles.
  • Experience in analog and digital circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB layout.
  • Experience with fabrication, debugging, and characterization of electronic components and assemblies.
  • Experience with sensors and sensor signal processing for physics research applications.
  • Experience with low noise circuits and wideband pulse circuits.
  • Experience with analog circuit simulation (SPICE).
  • Experience with FPGA design and VHDL/Verilog.
  • Familiarity with trigger and data acquisition systems.
