About the position

Draper is seeking a Mechanical Engineer 2 to join our innovative team in Cambridge, MA. As an independent, nonprofit research and development company, we tackle significant national challenges, delivering successful and usable solutions across various fields, including military defense, space exploration, and biomedical engineering. Our multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists work collaboratively in an environment that fosters the cross-fertilization of ideas necessary for true innovation. The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for developing novel solutions to customer-driven problems, focusing on ruggedized miniature electro-mechanical systems and systems designed for harsh environments, such as high-g, high temperature, and high vibration conditions. This role encompasses the full cycle of mechanical design, from concept exploration and trade study analysis to prototyping, testing, and final delivery. The Mechanical design engineers at Draper are dedicated to solving some of the nation’s most challenging problems, making a significant impact through their work. In this position, you will perform mechanical design concept exploration, conduct trade study analysis, and execute assignments with minimal guidance from the group leader. You will help define the design approach for specific problems and contribute high-quality content for technical reports and presentations. Proactive communication of needs and concerns associated with design decisions to project leadership is essential. The role also requires collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring effective communication with program team members, leadership, and non-technical personnel. You will need to balance multiple competing tasks and demands while maintaining a thorough understanding of applied math and physics, demonstrating excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are crucial, along with proficiency in general modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB and CAD software.

Responsibilities

  • Performs mechanical design concept exploration, trade study analysis, down-selection, prototyping, and testing with minimal guidance from group leader.
  • Helps define the design approach for a particular problem and independently executes assignments.
  • Contributes high quality content for technical reports and presentations with minimal guidance.
  • Proactively identifies needs and concerns associated with design decisions and communicates them to project leadership.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant field.
  • Master's degree is preferred.
  • Requires 3-5 years of experience with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or full cycle of mechanical design experience.
  • 0-3 years of experience with a master's degree.
