About the position

The Electronics Technician at the Department of Commerce will serve as the NIST Locksmith, overseeing the Locksmith Shop and associated key systems on the Gaithersburg campus. This role requires expertise in electronic and mechanical locking hardware, key management systems, and the ability to perform installations and repairs. The technician will also participate in the Cyberlocks team to enhance the program and will be responsible for maintaining security systems and issuing keys to keyholders.

Responsibilities

• Administer the Locksmith Shop and associated key systems on the Gaithersburg campus.
• Adjust and repair electronic and mechanical locking hardware for proper functionality.
• Maintain a Key Management System (Simple K) for identifying keying system structure.
• Complete work order tickets for service work related to locking hardware and key systems.
• Issue keys to keyholders and adhere to policies and procedures.
• Participate as a member of the Cyberlocks team to improve the Cyberlocks program.
• Purchase items for the Division as a purchase cardholder.

Requirements

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in federal service, specifically in operating and maintaining security systems and hardware.
• Two full years of graduate-level education directly related to the work of the position, or a master's degree in a relevant field.
• A combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education directly related to the work of the position.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with power tools for installation of security locking mechanisms.
• Familiarity with electronic locking systems and their components.
