About the position

The Elementary Autism Spectrum Disorder Teacher at Kentwood Public Schools is responsible for maximizing the learning experience of students with special needs, particularly those on the autism spectrum. This role involves implementing district-approved curriculum, conducting assessments, developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs), and providing a safe and engaging learning environment. The teacher will work closely with students, parents, and other staff to address specific needs and promote personal growth and behavioral management.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations of students to identify learning issues.
  • Participate in PPTs and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Assist students and teaching staff in implementing students' IEPs and behavior management plans.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies and organizations as needed.
  • Differentiate instruction using a variety of styles to engage mixed culture and ability classes.
  • Serve as a resource to students and parents for counseling and support.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping for student information.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication.
  • Assist in the orientation of new teachers and provide in-service training.
  • Select and requisition appropriate educational materials and maintain inventory records.
  • Utilize Crisis Prevention Techniques (CPI) to manage aggressive situations.

Requirements

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certification.
  • Special Education endorsement in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) preferred.
  • Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, and methods.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Experience with data information systems and data analysis.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of research-based interventions for reading and math.
  • Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
  • Knowledge of behavior support strategies.
  • Previous experience teaching special education programs.
  • Understanding of a learning styles approach to instruction.
