About the position

The Elementary Custodian Rover plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of school facilities by covering for the head custodian. This position requires a reliable individual who can perform essential functions satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodations. The custodian is responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the school environment is clean, safe, and conducive to learning. Regular attendance, punctuality, and physical presence are essential functions of this role. The custodian will assist with routine maintenance of school and district buildings, ensuring that all areas are cleaned and sanitized according to district standards. This includes cleaning classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, and other areas, as well as performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks as needed. In addition to cleaning duties, the custodian will be responsible for securing the building at the beginning and end of shifts, training and monitoring contract and hourly employees, and maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies. The role also involves outdoor maintenance tasks such as mowing lawns, removing snow and debris, and ensuring the grounds are well-kept. The custodian may also be involved in emergency procedures and security measures, including locking and unlocking doors and responding to after-hours emergencies. Overall, the Elementary Custodian Rover is a vital position that supports the overall functionality and safety of the school environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with routine maintenance of school and district buildings.
  • Check and secure the building at the beginning and end of shifts.
  • Train and monitor contract and hourly employees.
  • Clean rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas according to district standards.
  • Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and touchpoints.
  • Maintain, clean, and sanitize restrooms.
  • Fill soap, paper towel, toilet paper, and other dispensers as needed.
  • Mop or run an auto scrubber for floor cleaning.
  • Extract and bonnet carpets as required.
  • Assist with floor refinishing tasks.
  • Clean up body fluids following bloodborne pathogen procedures.
  • Order and keep inventory of cleaning and paper supplies.
  • Remove garbage and maintain grounds, including mowing and edging lawns, removing snow, ice, and debris.
  • May remove graffiti and repair vandalism.
  • Repair furniture, lockers, doors, and small equipment as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs to windows, doors, switches, desks, tables, and appliances.
  • Assemble new equipment and furniture as required.
  • Prepare and set up rooms for meetings and activities, and clean up afterwards.
  • Help maintain and operate mechanical systems in the building.
  • May be CPR and First Aid trained to respond to emergencies.
  • Assist in restricting access by locking and unlocking doors.
  • Involved with building security after hours, including turning on/off security systems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six months of custodial experience is required.
  • Skilled in training, organizing, and monitoring supervised workers.
  • Knowledge of operating and maintaining basic cleaning equipment, including buffers and auto scrubbers.
  • Skilled in the use of general maintenance hand tools and small/large power tools.
  • Knowledgeable about ventilating and heating systems and able to perform minor adjustments.
  • Understanding of cleaning solvents and their proper application.
  • Familiarity with bloodborne pathogens and cleaning procedures.
  • General knowledge of sprinkling systems and emergency procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience in a school environment.
