About the position

The Long Term Substitute position is designed to support a K-5 English Language Arts/Reading and Math intervention program that promotes academic excellence through differentiated instruction tailored to meet the needs of all students. The role emphasizes establishing and maintaining a positive climate of open communication and cooperation with parents, students, administrators, and other staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and supports an intervention program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students based on student data.
  • Provides reading and math instruction aligned to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, and assists in articulating and coordinating reading and math support services for regular and special education students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives as goals and monitors progress for students.
  • Works with Building Principal and Director of Curriculum in implementing the Title I Targeted Assistance/Intervention Program and prepares assessments, reports and plans, as required.
  • Provides support for the Title I Targeted Assistance/Intervention Program and works with paraprofessionals and classroom teachers in coordinating reading and math support services across the curriculum; facilitates meetings on a regular basis with paraprofessionals to coordinate reading support services.
  • Helps facilitate the transition of elementary students to the middle level in terms of reading and math support services.
  • Assists in planning and implementing professional development for classroom teachers and paraprofessionals related to effective reading and math instruction/literacy practices.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the needs, learning styles and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Keeps parents informed of students' progress. Interacts regularly with parents and parental support groups.
  • Plans and coordinates Reading events in conjunction with the building principal, Interventionists and Curriculum Director.
  • Administers diagnostic, standardized assessments, analyzes results and prepares reading evaluations to be presented at team meetings; administers standardized tests (i.e. MCAS, Stanford-10) to small groups of students in accordance with Individual Education Plans.
  • Uses a variety of informal tools (i.e. running records, reading inventories, content assessments, etc.) to assess students and uses data to identify student needs, provide targeted support and monitor progress.
  • Implements the district's philosophy of education and objectives as outlined in the Somerset Strategic Plan.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops clear expectations for classroom behavior and procedures.
