About the position

The Elementary School Counselor at Columbia Public Schools is responsible for implementing a comprehensive school counseling program aimed at addressing the social, emotional, academic, and career needs of elementary students. This role involves delivering counseling services, collaborating with teachers and parents, and supporting the overall well-being of students within the school environment.

Responsibilities

• Implement the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program, including Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Student Planning, and Systems Support.
• Work with the Elementary School Counseling Coordinator to establish program goals.
• Assist students in adjusting to school and developing positive self-concepts.
• Deliver the Elementary School Counseling Curriculum in K-5 classrooms regularly.
• Provide individual and small group counseling and crisis intervention to promote healthy development.
• Consult with teachers, parents, and administration regarding student needs.
• Facilitate parent groups to improve parental skills and lead discussions on relevant topics.
• Conduct in-service training for school staff on understanding the special needs of students.
• Assist with school-wide programs that benefit children's academic, emotional, and social success.
• Coordinate mental health services and community support for students and families.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in school counseling.
• Missouri certification in K-12 Student Services - Counselor.
• Two years of successful experience as a classroom teacher preferred.
