About the position

The Elementary School Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and wellness of students, staff, and visitors at the school. This position involves providing immediate first aid, managing health records, coordinating healthcare services, and communicating health-related information to parents and staff. The nurse is responsible for maintaining health standards and ensuring compliance with state laws regarding student health screenings and medication administration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate general first aid to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Review immunization and physical exam records and arrange school physicals as required.
  • Conduct mandatory health screenings as required by law.
  • Dispense medication to students as indicated by doctor's prescriptions.
  • Keep the Building Principal(s) and Executive Director informed of health and wellness issues.
  • Communicate with parents and teachers regarding student health.
  • Organize and coordinate healthcare services within the district.
  • Maintain acceptable health standards and school health records.
  • Administer emergency treatment for health problems as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain health records, including medical and dental records.
  • Prepare Critical Care Plans for students as needed.
  • Observe the student population to identify new health trends or needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff regarding medical supervision for students.
  • Prepare medications for class trips or off-campus activities.
  • Maintain cumulative health records for all students.
  • Advise administration on student exclusion and readmission related to health issues.
  • Notify parents/guardians of student illness or injury as needed.
  • Arrange transportation for sick or injured individuals as necessary.
  • Order and maintain inventory of medical supplies.
  • Attend in-service training, faculty meetings, and professional development sessions.

Requirements

  • Possession of a license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, community members, and staff members.
