About the position

The Elementary Substitute School Nurse at Boone Community School District is responsible for promoting and protecting the health of school-age children. This role involves conducting health assessments, developing health plans, and providing health education and counseling to students and families. The nurse serves as a liaison between the school, families, and community health resources, ensuring that students receive appropriate care and support for their health needs.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes and protects the optimal health status of school-age children
  • Provides health assessments and observes children for development and health patterns
  • Develops and implements a student health plan
  • Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel
  • Initiates referrals to parents, school personnel, or community health resources
  • Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, and school personnel
  • Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students
  • Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data
  • Plans and implements school health management protocols
  • Develops procedures for emergency nursing management
  • Provides direct health education and counseling to assist students and families
  • Participates in health education for the improvement of health
  • Serves as a resource person to school staff members in health instruction
  • Coordinates school and community health activities
  • Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers
  • Engages in research and evaluation of school health services
  • Provides consultation in the formation of health policies and objectives
  • Participates in IEP plan development where applicable
  • Assists with the Medicaid claiming process for qualified students
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse License
  • Preferred experience with pediatrics or cardiac patients
  • BOEE Statement of Professional Recognition
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships effectively and professionally with families and students
  • Experience developing and implementing curriculum
  • Physical ability to handle frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and moving throughout the room
  • Proven ability to maintain a safe and studious classroom environment
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum
  • Ability to collaborate within the school and instructional setting
  • Demonstrated desire to be a life-long learner.
