About the position

The Elevator Mechanic position at Indiana University involves performing maintenance, repair, and inspection of various elevator systems within university-owned properties. The role requires both independent work and collaboration with other trades, ensuring the functionality and safety of elevators, escalators, and related equipment. The mechanic will also participate in training apprentices and may perform general building maintenance as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform planned maintenance and repairs on elevator systems, escalators, chairlifts, and conveyors.
  • Inspect wiring connections, control panel hookups, and door installations.
  • Operate elevators to assess power demand and test for overload factors.
  • Read schematics and troubleshoot elevator malfunctions.
  • Conduct acceptance and routine inspections, witness tests, and report results.
  • Order parts through the supervisor and repair or replace worn components.
  • Clean and maintain machine rooms and elevator pits.
  • Remove passengers from stuck elevators as necessary.
  • Participate in training of apprentices and other workers.
  • Perform general building maintenance tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (HSED or GED).
  • DOL certificate in applicable trade.
  • 5 years of verifiable journey-level experience.
  • Valid Indiana elevator mechanic license upon date of hire.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
  • Ability to represent the company with external constituents.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) license.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain OSHA required certifications.
