Eligibility Counselor

About the position

The Eligibility Counselor at Lexington Medical Center is responsible for providing professional eligibility screenings to self-paying patients, ensuring fair and equitable billing methods, and offering hospital procedure estimates upon request. This role requires adherence to hospital policies and procedures while maintaining a high level of customer service and confidentiality. The position is full-time, operating during day shifts, and plays a crucial role in assisting patients with financial assistance programs and navigating their healthcare options.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional eligibility screenings to self-paying patients.
• Establish a fair and equitable bill liquidation method for patients.
• Provide hospital procedure estimates upon request.
• Review Financial Assistance Programs with patients or their authorized representatives.
• Follow up with patient referrals and walk-ins needing financial assistance.
• Initiate counseling and screening for indigent and catastrophic programs.
• Calculate estimates for hospital procedures and maintain electronic records of estimates provided.
• Respond to customer inquiries, complaints, and correspondence in a professional manner.
• Document all activity related to patient accounts processed.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• 2 years of experience in a healthcare, patient registration, or customer service setting.
• Familiarity with medical terminology and procedures.
• Working knowledge of the Fair Debt Collection Act.
• Experience with PCs and other office equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients of all ages and backgrounds.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party payors.
• Knowledge of financial assistance programs and eligibility criteria.
