About the position

The Transitional Assistance Department (TAD) is seeking an Eligibility Worker I to join our team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. This role is crucial in determining eligibility for various public assistance programs, including cash aid, CalFresh, and Medi-Cal. As an Eligibility Worker, you will utilize an automated system to gather and analyze financial information from applicants, ensuring that they receive the assistance they need. Your responsibilities will include conducting interviews, interpreting program regulations, and making appropriate referrals to community resources. Incumbents in this position will undergo a comprehensive training program that spans nine months, combining both in-class and on-the-job training. Successful completion of this program, along with satisfactory performance evaluations, will qualify you for promotion to Eligibility Worker II. As an Eligibility Worker I, you will be expected to travel throughout San Bernardino County, requiring a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance. Responsibilities

  • Determine eligibility for public assistance programs such as cash aid, CalFresh, and Medi-Cal.
  • Conduct interviews and gather financial information from applicants.

  • Utilize an automated system to process applications and maintain accurate records.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time experience gathering financial, family, or personal information from the public over the phone or in-person, including computer usage.
  • One year of full-time experience in a similar role, along with 15 semester units of completed college coursework in behavioral/social science or public/business administration.
  • 30 semester units of completed college coursework in behavioral/social science or business/public administration.
  • Completion of an Associate's degree or higher in any field.
  • Completion of the 'Case Management in the Public Sector Certificate' from San Bernardino Valley College or a similar program.
  • Six months of full-time experience as a Public Service Employee with the Transitional Assistance Department.
