About the position

The Embedded Electrical Engineer will be responsible for developing electronic motor control systems for deployable space systems. This role involves leading the design and development of high-reliability embedded systems, including schematic design, PCB layout, firmware development, and system testing. The engineer will collaborate with various teams to ensure effective communication and functionality of the systems being developed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of high-reliability embedded systems for space applications.
  • Gather requirements, perform schematic design, and PCB layout in Altium.
  • Develop firmware in C and conduct comprehensive system testing.
  • Create prototypes for R&D projects and future products.
  • Modify existing board designs in Altium to meet new customer requirements.
  • Develop embedded software to interface with components using protocols such as SPI, RS422, CCSDS, and I2C.
  • Maintain and modify existing software, adding new features as needed.
  • Develop Python test scripts to automate hardware testing throughout the build process.
  • Collaborate with purchasing and contract manufacturers to ensure hardware assembly and manage procurement timelines.
  • Analyze and debug non-functional units using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes.
  • Create detailed work instructions for repairs and recommend component replacements.
  • Maintain relationships with space hardware IC vendors and stay informed about new components.
  • Write comprehensive procedures and documentation for hardware systems.

Requirements

  • B.S in electrical engineering, electronics systems design or related field with 5 years of experience; a master's degree or experience with electronics design for space applications may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with space-industry standards for electronics and design factors of safety.
  • Proficient with schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Effective communication skills, including technical writing and oral presentations.
  • Understanding of project management, including costs and schedules.
  • Familiarity with software development for embedded applications with microcontrollers in C.
