About the position

As an Embedded Software Engineering Manager at The Toro Company, you will play a pivotal role in leading and mentoring teams responsible for the design and testing of embedded software. This position requires a blend of leadership and technical expertise, as you will oversee both the development of new products and the maintenance of existing ones. Your leadership will extend to managing an offshore embedded software test team in India, ensuring that all deliverables meet high-quality standards and are completed within specified time frames. In this role, you will be responsible for planning and implementing embedded software design, development, and testing projects. This includes managing priorities, resource allocation, and ensuring compliance with functional safety regulations and standards. You will supervise the creation and execution of embedded software test plans, promoting test automation and effective defect management practices. Collaboration is key, as you will coordinate with various departments, suppliers, and partners to achieve organizational goals. Your technical mentoring will be crucial for the professional development of your team members. You will also be involved in designing and developing solutions, performing engineering calculations, and investigating field issues. Setting standards and expectations for embedded software design and testing practices will be part of your responsibilities, along with developing a comprehensive testing strategy that aligns with industry best practices. You will implement effective defect tracking and management processes to ensure timely resolution of issues, all while balancing your managerial duties with individual contributions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor embedded software design and testing teams, including the offshore embedded software test team in India, ensuring high-quality deliverables within specified time frames.
  • Plan and implement embedded software design, development, and testing projects, managing priorities, resource needs, and allocation.
  • Oversee the development of embedded software for electronic technologies, ensuring compliance with functional safety regulations and standards.
  • Supervise the creation and execution of embedded software test plans, promoting test automation and effective defect management.
  • Coordinate with other departments, suppliers, and partners to achieve organizational goals.
  • Provide technical mentoring and professional development for team members.
  • Design and develop solutions, perform engineering calculations and studies, and investigate field issues.
  • Set standards and expectations for embedded software design and testing practices.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive embedded software testing strategy that aligns with industry best practices.
  • Implement effective defect tracking and management processes, ensuring timely resolution of issues.
  • Balance work as a manager and as an individual contributor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering field (required).
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, or Business Management (preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in embedded software development with hands-on product design and testing (required).
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience (preferred).
  • 6+ years of experience in embedded software development with hands-on product design and testing (required).
  • 2 years of supervisory experience (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of hardware-software integration (required).
  • Experience with complex electrical, mechanical, and software design for embedded electronics (required).
  • Proficient in product specification development and system engineering (required).
  • Skilled in various testing types: functional, regression, performance, usability, and security (required).
  • Experience with continuous improvement processes in testing automation practices (required).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer orientation and ability to anticipate needs.
  • Ability to mentor team members and guide development.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Results-driven, action-oriented, and possessing a high degree of integrity.
